The AMD Socket AM2 platform makes for a very solid SLI gaming platform. AMD socket AM2 processors and motherboards are extremely reasonable right now. We can build with a very fast Athlon 64 X2 CPU, add 2ea. GeForce 8800GTS 640M PCI-E video cards in SLI mode, and thus create one hell of a gaming rig for a moderate price. Also, the upcoming Phenom quad-cores will work in the socket AM2 boards.
